This canoe is named Tota O’Onu. It is an Atiuan Outrigger Canoe, from Atiu (located in the southern Cook Islands). It is named after a fishing ground on the southern coast of Atiu. It’s used for inshore and reef fishing.
Hulls of dugout canoes are usually carved from a single tamanu tree; this one is lashed with sennit made from coconut fibre.
Dugout boats carved from tree trunks are one of the fundamental boat types from which later boatbuilding practices evolved. Simple dugout boats generally offer poor stability and load carrying ability, the addition of an outrigger on one or both sides transforms the stability. This evolution led ultimately to the fast sailing proas of the Pacific that so impressed early European arrivals.
Length: 4.2m Beam overall: 1.12m

These are gorgeous. Like the Secret Life of Plankton video, but bigger! Lovely stuff.
